Community Cancer Clinics

TACHRC CIC is developing integrated services to reduce health inequalities in cancer care for Ethnic Minority communities in Surrey and Portsmouth initially. This includes exploring the feasibility of establishing community-based cancer clinics to provide accessible and culturally sensitive care, alongside the development of a Telehealth application prototype to enhance access to information, support, and remote interactions.

Our operational model:

A comprehensive, consultant-led hybrid service dedicated to significantly reducing health inequalities in cancer care for Ethnic Minority communities in Surrey and Portsmouth initially. Our model integrates accessible virtual support with crucial in-person clinical assessment.

The service will focus on improving early diagnosis and engagement for common cancers prevalent in these communities, initially including breast, lung, and bowel cancers. We will provide:

  • Culturally appropriate and language-compliant virtual consultations: Offering tailored information, advice, and remote support on cancer prevention, early detection, and navigation of healthcare pathways.
  • Face-to-face community clinics: These clinics will offer initial triage for symptomatic patients, including vital clinical examinations.
  • Streamlined referral pathways: Facilitating direct and timely referrals for necessary diagnostics (e.g., imaging like ultrasound scan, mammogram, or relevant endoscopy for bowel/lung symptoms) and subsequent treatment into NHS secondary care.
  • Ongoing support and follow-up: Ensuring patients are supported through their diagnostic journey and beyond, aiming to reduce delayed cancer diagnoses and missed appointments by providing culturally relevant care.

This hybrid approach is designed to overcome traditional barriers to care, ensuring timely access and improved outcomes. Dr. Tasmia Tahmid, a Consultant Breast Surgeon with experience in hybrid service delivery in Bangladesh and work within the Frimley Health and Portsmouth NHS system , will lead this initiative, bringing invaluable clinical expertise and local understanding to ensure high-quality, integrated care.
